PHP upgrade service
Upgrade an older PHP framework application
An old framework needs more than a runtime switch. I review PHP, framework versions and extensions together to find a practical upgrade path for the existing application.
Your PHP version, hosting setup and any error message are usually enough to start the conversation.

Runtime and framework compatibility belong together
A framework may require particular PHP versions or lack support for a newer runtime. Packages, plugins and custom code add their own constraints. Changing a version requirement in configuration does not resolve those constraints by itself.
The review starts with actual versions and components. That determines the updates, replacements or intermediate steps needed. There is no blanket promise of a direct upgrade from every historical release.
Applications we can assess
Symfony
Older Symfony applications require a review of components, bundles and their interaction with custom code. For dedicated Symfony work, see Symfony development and upgrades.
Laravel
The installed release, Composer packages and application extensions determine the options. Keeping and updating the existing stack is considered first.
CakePHP
The framework version, plugins and customizations shape the scope. A runtime change alone may not be enough if the framework does not support the target PHP release.
Zend Framework
Start by identifying the components and custom application code in use. A successor or migration path must be evaluated against that inventory.
Yii
The release branch and available extensions are part of the assessment. Whether an update or another route is economical depends on the actual application.
Slim and other frameworks
Small frameworks still have compatibility boundaries and dependencies. Other systems can be considered after reviewing the codebase; a technology list is not a project assessment.
Three possible approaches
Update the current framework
Where a viable path exists, keep it. Adapt the necessary interfaces, dependencies and application code while preserving useful business behaviour.
Upgrade in stages
Intermediate versions can separate changes into testable steps. They do not all have to become public production releases. Testing and deployment need a coordinated plan.
Migrate incrementally
Where dependencies or architecture prevent a practical update, migration is an option. Symfony may fit, but it is not automatically the destination. Cost, risk and maintainability guide the decision.
Useful information for the first review
Share the known PHP and framework versions, available composer.json and composer.lock files, important extensions and key workflows. Do not include credentials in the initial message. We agree how to provide source access separately.

FAQ
Must a Laravel or CakePHP application move to Symfony?
No. The existing framework’s upgrade path is assessed first. A migration needs a concrete technical or commercial reason.
Can the framework version alone establish the cost?
No. Packages, custom extensions, the data model and testability affect the work. The version is a starting point for an assessment.
Tell me what your PHP application needs
Your PHP version, hosting setup and any error message are usually enough to start the conversation.
If available, include the target PHP version and a short description of the application. You do not need a complete specification to get in touch.
